Description
An S-trap is a plumbing fixture used in drain systems to prevent foul odors and gases from entering buildings. It consists of a curved pipe that creates a water seal, effectively blocking the passage of sewer gases back into the building. The S-shape of the trap gives it its name, as it resembles the letter “S” when viewed from the side. When water flows down the drain, it fills the curved section of the trap, creating a barrier that prevents gases from traveling up the pipe and into the living or working space. S-traps are commonly used in sinks, basins, and other plumbing fixtures where a downward flow of water is needed to maintain the water seal. However, due to their design, S-traps are more prone to siphoning, which can lead to trap seal loss. For this reason, many modern plumbing codes now require the use of P-traps or other approved traps that are less susceptible to siphoning and offer better protection against sewer gas infiltration.
